My Very First Crush

Hopalong Cassidy was my very first crush. I was 5. He was a man in his 60s. How's that for a May-December crush? My child's mind mistook his silver hair for blond. Hopalong was one of those after school shows I never missed (at least I think it was on after school) but today I can't recall a single episode. I do remember Gabby Hayes coming to our little Hamlet in North Central PA (not far from where he originally came from in WNY) when I was very young. I remember all the kids crowding around him for autographs while I stood rather disinterested on the edge of the crowd with my mother. The Christmas I was 5, my brother and I each received a gift of a cowboy outfit of our favorite TVstar. His was Roy Rogers. Mine, of course, was Hopalong Cassidy. I was dressed all in black and had a Hopalong logo on the pants pocket. I still have a treasured picture of that morning dressed in my Hopalong outfit, clutching my new doll. Now my Man in Black is Adam Cartwright of Bonanza - I could never have guessed that Christmas morning of 1953 how pivotal that all black outfit would be many years down the road.
