My first hero

by Nancy

There was nothing like the excitement in my small Missouri town when a new Hopalong Cassidy movie was coming to the local movie house! Our big sisters and aunties might cry over Bette Davis and moon over Charles Boyer, but Hoppy was the best! He was smart, clever, rode a beautiful white horse, and rarely had to shoot anybody, much less even draw his pistol. All the way home from the movie, my aunt Myra would tease me about him, but I didn't care: Hoppy was the man I looked up to and dreamed about, a real Western hero.
