Meeting Clayton Moore, The Lone Ranger
by Stephen Hartman
(Jersey City, NJ)
In 1979 I was hired to handle security for a Nostalgia
Convention to be held at the McAlpin Hotel (HOTEL PENN
SYLVANIA), in New York City, across the street from Mad-
ison Square Garden. Anyway, Paul Saryian was chairman of the Convention & had Clayton Moore as his guest of honor. The previous year, Larry 'Buster' Crabbe had been Guest of Honor. Mr. Moore showed up at the Hotel in civilian clothing, so nobody recognized him. For me this was the 2nd time I was meeting him. Some years earlier I was at COLONY RECORD SHOP when this tall gentleman and a well dressed lady walked in and went over to the CLASSIC RECORD section. He couldn't find what he was looking for, so he asked a clerk for some help. As soon as he opened his mouth, the voice was so recognizable that the clerk got this look on his face and ran in the opposite direction. The gentleman and the lady left the store in a hurry. About a block down from COLONY I caught up with the duo, and without looking at the gent, i took it upon myself to apologize for what had happened. Now here's the interesting part.... when I introduced myself to Mr. Moore at the convention in NY City, he remembered me, and gave me a SILVER BULLET which he signed! I still have that SILVER BULLET. I also had the good fortune of meeting the 'other' Lone Ranger, John Hart, and have his autograph also.
