Festus`s Voice NEW
by: Rob Martin

You are of course right. What put me off his voice was the fact that i had never heard him speaking like that before and it kinda put me off, but now that you have explained i can accept that.
I think its a great show and i watch 4 episodes a day, 2 on cbs and 2 on tcm here in the uk.I also have all the half hour shows which i watch when i have the time. Rob.

Ken Curtis' Accent for Festus NEW
by: Anonymous

Without Ken Curtis' accent for Festus......he would have gone the way of all character actors...down, down and down. The director, John Ford, made Ken develop the complete accent, (which is a real hill country accent), for the Duke Wayne, Ward Bond movie, The Searchers.

I believe it was Ken's daughter who said that whenever her father was studying a Gunsmoke script, you could always tell when he came to a "Festus" part as his eye would begin to close and develop that squint.

After Gunsmoke, Ken made very successful tours as Festus all over the world.....Festus was much loved everywhere. You can find many Festus songs, concerts even the story of Ruth his mule on You Tube. Yep, without that accent, he would have faded into obscurity long before he did........he became a star because of it and the character he developed. KEITH
